Leo Joseph

Leo has for years thought that Key Grip is a marvellous name for a band and he’s used it since about 1992 in various places he’s lived such as Brisbane, Philadelphia and now Canberra. He used it for the Philadelphia version of the band when he lived there between 1997 and 2005, and now of course it is the name of the Canberra-based outfit.

From Adelaide originally, he loves learning what the blues has to offer, especially the seemingly endless lode that blues piano seems to provide. The first blues outfit he played in after being in rock bands for years was Tony Eyres’s Full House Blues Band back in Adelaide in 1985. Memorable Thursday nights at the Brittania Hotel were a great feature of that band.

Piano has always been the instrument that fascinates him the most but Leo is an old rhythm guitarist from way back , just chugging away with the rhythm section applying a less is more approach and looking for the colour in the chords. In Key Grip, Leo takes the line that “It’s gotta swing”, so whether it’s up tempo or not Leo’s going to be doing his best to make sure it’s all just swinging and cooking along.
